About us
The Jewish Community of Oporto fosters the creation and development of Jewish life and religion, and its infrastructure meets all the requirements for the practice of Judaism according to Halacha in northern Portugal. The Community has over one thousand members from more than thirty nationalities, who have access to the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue – where a minyan has been maintained for over a decade on all Shabbatoth and chagim – along with kiddush, mikvah, kosher food, and a Jewish cemetery. Recently, a second synagogue was opened, called Mekor Simcha. The Jewish Community of Oporto is led by the Rabbinate of Oporto, which is recognized by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.
We are also the European organization that most actively promotes Jewish culture and Jewish history, with a Jewish Museum and a Holocaust Museum, as well as the production of films about the history of the Jews in Portugal. These initiatives form part of the community’s broader strategy to foster Jewish culture and history and to combat antisemitism.
